"(If you can ) watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools" – Rudyard Kipling

Veronica Almedom

Member of the Federal commission on migration and co-founder of IFE, Information Forum for Eritrea, an independent NGO committed to the promotion and respect of Human Rights in Eritrea.

Veronica is Swiss from Eritrean origin. Since the tragedy of Lampedusa in October 2013, she commits body and soul for the rest of fundamental rights of her compatriots forced into exile. With a Panafrican mind, she aspires to see an ever-younger African diaspora, connected and involved in the social and political challenges of the African continent.

Veronica would sum up her cultural heritage in 2 words : genius and fraternity.

Her talk will be in French.

“As long as the lions won’t have their historians, hunting stories will tell the hunters’ feats.” – African proverb

ELIEZER KING

Passionate about writing, music and History, inherited the precious genes of a significant part of the people in the world.

Eliezer was born in the Dominican Republic, from Dominican parents. He migrated to Switzerland when he was 12. Interested in understanding racism at an early stage, Eliezer invested a significant part of his life trying to explore the origins of this ideology and why it would harm him and his melanin-pigmented fellows.

As previously mentioned, during his talk, Eliezer will attempt to be the historian of the lions and the lionesses, who will certainly recognize themselves. He will mention the outstanding trajectory of Saint Maurice, patron saint of Valais, Annibal Barca, one of the most talented military strategists born in Carthage (today Tunisia) or Alexandre Dumas, writer of French and Haitian descent and others more recent characters who have left their mark on History. Eliezer’s talk will shed light on a past made of unbreakable links between the people of the world.

If Eliezer would have to sum up his cultural heritage, he would only say one word : self-determination.

Hadi Barkat

Game designer. Book author. Tennis geek. Federer, Murakami and Boston Celtics Fan. Founder of Helvetiq, a publishing company of games and books, Hadi feels that he’s always been living in between two cultures from his early years in Algeria.

The Afro-European journey of Hadi stretches from Biskra, his parents’ city in the Algerian Sahara, to the shores of Copenhagen and the north American east coast. Having graduated in Computer Engineering from the EPFL and worked in a venture capital fund evaluating start-ups, Hadi felt the inspiration appeal to move on the opposite side, and become one of the founders of those creative undertakings.

The interest in diverse cultures is a constant in Hadi’s work. Exploring the colors and the says of Switzerland in his books “Entre Rouge et Blanc” and “Contre-sagesses Suisses”, or developing games to learn 50 words in the 4 Swiss national languages and English are just one part of his multiple concretized ideas. Finding the inspiration in himself and in following the passions of his team members, Hadi is an artist in the clothes of a bold entrepreneur.

Hadi’s talk will be in English.

“ Il faut commencer à être où l’on réussit à être. Le reste est mouvement qui, à travers l’être, se transforme en existence. Et le secret consiste à faire. ” – Thibault de Montalembert

Amal anticipates that many of them will be the next influencers and decision-makers of the private, public and creative sectors in Switzerland, and encourages them to organise, network and build projects and ventures together.

Amal has founded the House of the Mighty in 2016, an organization aiming at analyzing trends and at providing creative ideas for the business sector to develop in a sustainable way. Searching to develop projects which combine the knowledge of both the public and private sector, she is now with four other women, creating Safro, an organisation which strives to support the Afropean community in Switzerland. Safro aims to be both a model for social resilience as well as an innovator through its financial structure.

Amani shall discuss how lessons of freedom and resilience African cultures’ teach us, have inspired her to create an organisation putting emphasis on the richness and complexity of Afropean cultures in order to overcome stigma and discrimination.

For Amani, her cultural heritage can be summed up in the following two words: dream and aesthetic.

Amani’s talk will be in English.
